How much aware are you of safe water?
It is impossible to think about the survival of mankind without safe water. Even though three quarters of Earth is covered in water, we have to fight for a glass of safe water. Because water is life.
According to a report named “Dawn of a Thirsty Century”, currently only 2.5% of the water sources around the world is salt-free that means drinkable. On the other hand, two-thirds of this small amount of drinkable water is ice, which is impossible for us to collect.
One study found that we can only use less than 0.08% of the world's water. But the demand for water is increasing. At this rate the demand for safe water will increase by 40 percent in the next 20 years.
About safe water, WWAP states that 70 percent of the salt-free water we have at our disposal is being used for agriculture and the remaining 30 percent is used for drinking purpose, industrial work, and other needs.
Also, most of the safe sources of water contain harmful germs, which is supplied to homes through pipes. And the presence of bacteria is high in this water. As a result, the transmission of various water borne diseases are increasing among the people day by day.
Many people in the country boil water, use common filters to make the water safer as they do not have a source of safe drinking water. Even after that, people are drinking arsenic-contaminated water more than tolerable levels. That water contains many more harmful substances including Iron and Lead.
According to another UNICEF survey, 38.3% of people drink contaminated water from variety of sources which carry a variety of viruses and bacteria. And now most of the people in the country drink tube well or supply water. However, not all sources of these waters are safe.
What we may not know is that these bacteria are responsible for our stomach and abdominal pain. Not only that, diseases like jaundice, diarrhea, Typhoid and cholera are caused by not drinking pure drinking water. And the biggest victims of waterborne diseases in our country are small children.
According to our Ministry of Health, 6% of deaths of children under five years of age are due to various water borne diseases.
We also know that almost all the water needed for irrigation in our country's agriculture is supplied by groundwater. And because of this in many cases extra water is consumed and water is wasted. In the city, the chances of getting water by any means other than ground water are very low, so the pressure on ground water is constantly increasing. And as a result, the water level going down by about 5 feet on an average every year.
Thus, the risk of contamination in groundwater is increasing due to excessive demand. So, we should all protect these sources of water as well as create public awareness to prevent wastage of water. Apart from this, care should be taken so that the water of ponds, canals and rivers are not polluted. We also need to work on the effects of water pollution due to climate change.
It is being considered that the two challenges we need to face in the future are-
- Drinking water crisis
- The other is global warming
It is not just a matter of falling ill due to lack of safe water. The lack of safe drinking water has a significant impact on the health and safety of all of us. Especially that which hinders the proper development of the young generation of the country.
Many of us still boil or purify water in various ways. But the way water pollution is increasing at the present time, the process of boiling or purifying water in the old way cannot give 100% guaranteed protection in any way. Moreover, boiling, and purifying water in the old way takes a lot of time and increases the cost of gas. And even after doing so much, their effectiveness is comparatively less.
So, many people want a simple solution to protect themselves and their family from these harmful germs. But advanced technology is needed to make drinking water safe from all kinds of germs, which is not available in any other way.
