Water and Health

Lose weight by drinking water

There’s no doubt we need water to live, but can drinking this clear colorless life-giving fluid also help us lose weight? Drinking water may not be the magic pill to shed those pounds faster, but not drinking enough water could make weight loss a little harder. Read on to know how water can help us shed those unwanted pounds, and improve our overall health.

Some of the ways drinking water can help you in your weight loss program.

Drinking water boosts metabolism- Staying hydrated helps keep your metabolism running, which is one of the key factors in weight loss. When you’re dehydrated, the body can slow down its metabolism so you won’t be burning as many calories as you normally would.

Drinking water makes you feel less hungry- There are two parts to this. First off, it’s very difficult for the body to tell the difference between hunger and thirst. So if you’re walking around feeling a gnawing sense of hunger, you might just be dehydrated. Try drinking a glass of water instead of grabbing a snack.

Drinking water before meals can also make you feel fuller and therefore reduce your food intake. So drink some before every meal.

Besides, you need to stay well hydrated to function properly and engage in workouts with the required amount of intensity. So make sure you drink enough water before, during and after exercising.

Drinking your heart out!

When you’re trying to lose weight, you don’t just have to watch what you’re eating but also what you’re drinking. Knowing what you need to stay away from can help you in your fat loss journey, so here’s a simple list:

  • Water: We’ve already talked about the role water can play when you’re trying to lose weight. Dehydration affects your metabolism, eating pattern and even exercise regimen so always make sure you’re drinking enough water from a trusted source
  • Milk: Whole milk often has too many calories, so staying away from it can help keep your overall calorie intake down. If you have to have it, opt for low fat/ skimmed milk and don’t put any sugar in it.
  • Coffee and tea: While these can make you feel alert and ready to face the day and/or your workout, loading it up with sugar and cream/milk isn’t going to help you. So go for black coffee or coffee with just a little sugar to handle the bitterness. As for tea, the same rules apply.
  • Juice: While lots of juices can be labelled off as healthy, they often come loaded with sugars and additives that can set you back when you’re trying to lose weight. While juices can be a good source of nutrition in terms of vitamins or minerals, keep the intake low and especially avoid processed ones.
  • Carbonated drinks and Energy drinks: They don’t really have much nutritional value and also come packed with sugar, so avoid these regardless of whether you’re trying to lose weight or not.
