May 7, 2020
People go to great lengths to lose weight nowadays. There is always some sort of new diet, new exercise taking over the world that promises you to shed those extra KGs. But sometimes, we forget the most important diet of all-DRINKING WATER.
Now it may seem like a myth, is losing weight that easy? To sum it up in one word, yes! Here is why-
Water speeds up your metabolism
The key to losing weight is fastening up the metabolism of your body. And it is no news that water helps your body to speed up your metabolism system.
Water cleanses your system
Drinking water helps your body get rid of the toxins that it stores. When you are hydrated enough, your body cleanses out the harmful bodies of your body. Your kidneys use water to get rid of certain waste products. It also results in the improvement of your overall energy.
Water is an appetite suppressant
When you drink enough water, it tricks your brain into thinking that you are full and your brain sends signals that you should stop eating. This results in less intake of food, hence help you lose weight.
Water may induce more calories burning
Drinking water temporarily increases our body's resting energy expenditure, or the number of calories burned while resting. This helps us lose weight on a certain level.
Moreover, drinking cold water might enhance water's calorie-burning benefits. When cold water enters our stomach, our body expends energy, or calories, by heating up the water for digestion.
Now let’s talk about how you can lose weight faster with water intake.
Drink a glass of water before every meal
Before you have every meal, drink a full glass of water. The water will aid digestion and speed weight. The feeling of being full of water will help you eat less than usual. Drinking water helps your body break down your meals and absorb its nutrients.
Replace your carbonated or sweetened drinks with water
Whenever you get thirsty or order a meal, do not go for a high-calorie drink such as carbonated beverages, sweetened smoothies, etc. Instead, get a full glass of water.
Drinking a zero-calorie, highly beneficial beverage instead of a high-calorie alternative can save you from gaining hundreds of calories per day, thus aiding in weight loss.
Cut down the salt intake and drink more water to lose water weight
The more dietary salt we take every day, the more it holds onto water weight. To reduce the amount of salt you take in every meal and opt for a healthier spice for extra flavor. If you constantly drink more water and take less salt, you will be able to shred the extra water weight.
Make detox water infusing fruits and vegetables
Take a detox drink every day to get rid of all the toxins in your body. Cut up some fresh fruits and vegetables such as lemons, apple, pineapple, watermelon, cucumber, herbs, and mints, etc. and put them in a jar with water. Drink the detox water every day and you will lose weight gradually.
Try water fasting
Water fasting is a popular method to lose weight. It requires drinking only water for a certain time of the day. Start small, do not push your limits. Try a few hours at first and then gradually train your body to go up to 24 hours without eating anything, just drinking water. Consult a nutritionist first.
How much water should you drink to lose weight?
It is extremely important to remember that water does not cancel out the unhealthy and high calories food you eat. With that being said, you may think how much water I should drink to lose a few KGs. Some of the health authorities have recommended drinking 2 liters of water every day for adults which may add up to 8-10 glasses a day.
However, this number is not fixed and it varies from person to person. Just like so many things, water requirements depend entirely on the individual. For example, if you are more physically active than most people and you sweat a lot, you will have to drink more water than usual to stay hydrated. If you are pregnant or a lactating mother, then you will have to drink more water daily.
Also consider increasing the amount of more water based fruits and vegetables in your diet.
Weight loss is not a short journey, it requires a considerable amount of time to show any effects. So you just have to be patient and keep drinking water any chance you get.
Put a reminder on your phone every day to remind you to drink water.
With all of these being said, drinking way too much water can also be damaging to your health. Drinking a lot of water in a short period of time can cause water toxicity in extreme cases. So don’t go overboard with it either.
We hope this was a helpful reminder to stay hydrated, stay healthy and stay light.
